The 60m wide tornado with winds in excess of 150km/h hit the Bunbury suburb of Withers at around 4pm (6pm AEST) on Friday.

Seven houses were deemed uninhabitable, and about a hundred others were damaged.

Western Australian Premier Roger Cook announced relief was now on offer.

Up to $4,000 can be claimed for local residents whose homes have been completely destroyed, and up to $2,000 will be for those who have suffered severe damage.

“It was a very frightening occasion for those who were directly affected,” Cook said.

Washington Emergency Services Secretary Stephen Dawson said the payments will help residents get back on their feet.

“The Prime Minister’s payment is really just to help residents over the next few days get back on their feet, find temporary accommodation where they need it if we don’t provide it, or buy clothes or whatever, from which they need,” he said.

A HAZMAT alert is currently in effect for those bounded by Hudson Drive, Bussell Highway, Washington Drive and Ocean Drive in Withers due to potential asbestos risk.

Residents are warned to take precautions.

“They should wear appropriate PPE or respiratory protection or of course they can call DFES and get help that way as well,” Dawson said.

Power was also restored in Bunbury after thousands of homes were cut when the tornado hit.
