Key events

Gray played a simple pass from the right to Gnonto. He curled in a brilliant early cross that fatally lured Gunn off his line and Pirro arrived at the far post to curl a smart header past Gunn.

GOAL! Leeds 2-0 Norwich (Piro 20)

Norwich didn’t get over the worst: Joel Pirro made it 2-0!

17 min Norwich calmed things down a bit, partly by passing the ball between the centre-backs. They will feel as if they have experienced the worst.

14 min “Wow,” says Peter O, “what a way for Leeds to get into Gruev!”

13 min The angle is aimed at the near beam.

13 min Giannoulis makes a good break down the left to win Norwich’s first corner. Before they take it, here is Iliya Gruev’s goal.

11 min “Farke arts meets Wagnerian drama,” exclaims Peter O. “What tension! The presence of Pierre Van Hooydonck’s son on the Norwich bench could change the tone of the match. A late bloomer thanks to the Sydney Opera House? Leeds exit stage left?’

10 min Norwich is in danger of being overwhelmed; they had 19 percent possession in the first 10 minutes. But Leeds will take nothing for granted, not after the horror of 2019.

8 min What a nice goal it was by Iliya Gruev. It’s the kind of goal Bernardo Silva would score, and there isn’t much higher praise than that when it comes to imaginative use of the left foot.

GOAL! Leeds 1-0 Norwich (Gruev 7)

Rodon marches forward down the inside right channel and is leveled by Nunes 30 yards from goal. Too wide for a shot so Gruev… scores! Everyone expected a cross, including Norwich keeper Angus Gunn, but Gruev curled the ball around the wall and into the near post!

6 min After a good run by Summerville, Rutter’s shot from the edge of the box is blocked.

5 minutes A ball over the top almost rebounds for Piroe in the area. Gunn pops off his line to take the second try. It’s all Leeds.

4 min: Chance for Leeds! Somerville plays a slick in-and-out with Rutter on the left edge of the area, moves inside and fires a shot over the bar from a tight angle. It wasn’t an easy finish, although he may have had options in the middle, I’m not sure.

2 min “Evening Rob!” writes Simon McMahon. “As you might expect, I have a thing for once-great teams that have burned brightly in a short time, enjoying success never before seen at the club when mixing it with the best both domestically and in Europe, maybe even winning the odd trophy. Glorious days, as someone once sang. Good luck to both clubs as they try to recreate some of that past glory tonight and book a trip to Wembley. Enjoy it while it lasts.”

I didn’t know you were Dunfermline fan.

1 minute Peep Peep! Leeds start from left to right as we watch.

There is a pulsating atmosphere at Elland Road; of course there is. Norwich centre-backs Ben Gibson and Shane Duffy are likely to see a lot of the ball in the first 10 minutes.

As did Leeds manager Daniel Farke

[On his team selection] We want to be more attacking at home. It was also a bit forced because Sam Byram has a hamstring problem. We believe Joel [Piroe] – he scored very important goals for us.

Norwich are a brave side with technically sound players in the middle. They have experienced strikers and we have to be compact and aggressive. We have to be there today.

We have a pretty good record when we are leading and scoring the first goal would make it easier for us tactically. But the players know they have to be involved from the first second to the last.

Norwich manager David Wagner speaks

We know it will be decided tonight and we are prepared for any scenario. It’s important to start well, to stay in the game. If we can score the first goal, it will be a huge boost.

[On Ashley Barnes] The medical department worked tirelessly. Barney is a tough guy and was desperate to be involved. Josh Sargent’s ankle is fine; he was never in doubt.

Team news

Both teams make one change from the first leg at Carrow Road. Joel Pirro replaces Sam Byram at Leeds, meaning Archie Gray will return at right-back. Norwich is back in force Ashley Barnes for Borja Sainz.

Preamble

Hello and welcome to live minute-by-minute coverage of the second leg of the play-off semi-final between Leeds and Norwich at Elland Road. The first leg at Carrow Road was goalless so this is basically a one-man game. To the victor belong the spoils…

We all know what the stake is; we don’t need poetry. The winners will play Southampton or West Bromwich Albion at Wembley a week on Sunday, the losers will wonder why they bothered for the last nine months.

Start 8 in the evening.
