Eight people were killed and eight were seriously injured when a bus carrying workers collided with a pickup truck and then overturned in northern Florida, authorities said.
Workers were on their way to pick melons at Cannon Farms in Dunnellon, a small farming community in Marion County, when their bus overturned around 8:30 a.m. on West State Road 40, the Ocala Star Banner reported, citing Florida Highway Patrol officials and Marion County Fire Rescue officials.
A total of 53 people were traveling in the bus.
The other 37 passengers were transported to hospitals for minor injuries, said James Lucas, public information officer for Marion County Fire Rescue.
A 2010 International bus struck a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck side-on, throwing it off the roadway, then crashed into a fence before overturning, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Steve Gaskins said in a statement.
